Introduction
Choose a manufacturer against one defined product and one destination market first. Verify who will make the product, whether the formula and presentation fit the local route, what evidence supports the proposed pack, and who owns each approval step. A low unit price is useful only after these questions have comparable answers.
For Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore, the same capsule or powder can require different preparation. An export-ready supplier should help identify missing inputs; a promise that one certificate covers every country is a reason to investigate further.
Start with a country-and-product brief
Give shortlisted suppliers the same brief: launch country, intended sales channel, target users, ingredient amounts per daily serving, dosage form, pack count, expected order range and proposed label claims. State whether you are buying bulk material, unlabelled finished units or a retail-ready private label product.
These distinctions change the comparison. A collagen ingredient quote excludes much of the work in a flavored, packed consumer product. A fish-oil softgel quote is incomplete without the oil specification, EPA/DHA amounts, shell composition and units per pack. For a mineral capsule, distinguish compound weight from elemental content.
Mark each input as confirmed, proposed or undecided. Ask the supplier to return a matching list of assumptions and exclusions rather than filling the gaps silently.
Confirm the manufacturing site behind the quotation
Identify the contracting company, actual manufacturing site, testing arrangements and exporter. If different companies perform these roles, request a written responsibility map. The names on a quotation, factory document and test report may differ legitimately, but the relationship must be explainable.
Check the manufacturing scope against the proposed dosage form and activity. A document covering cosmetics does not establish suitability for an ingestible supplement. A certificate naming one address does not automatically cover a second site.
For any credential used in the decision, check the holder, address, scope, issuer, validity and verification route. Ask which evidence can be reviewed before commercial commitment and which batch records will exist only after production. Our manufacturer document guide explains that distinction; the quality page provides a starting point for project-specific discussions.
Evaluate the destination route separately
The following checkpoints were reviewed on 29 October 2026. They concern products intended for commercial sale, not personal imports. Classification and the final formula determine the applicable route.
| Destination | Starting checkpoint | Question for the supplier and local partner |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesia | Health supplement registration and importer arrangements | Who will hold the registration, and can this site supply the applicable manufacturing and product dossier? |
| Thailand | Food classification, commercial import licensing and applicable product permission | Has the local importer confirmed the route for this exact formula and presentation? |
| Singapore | Health supplement classification and dealer responsibility | Is this a health supplement or a food product, and who holds the supporting safety, quality and label records? |
Indonesia: resolve registration support and material traceability
Imported health supplements have a product-registration route. Agree which local party manages it and what the manufacturer must supply. Manufacturing evidence must suit the site and product; do not assume that a general quality-management certificate answers every dossier requirement.
Review halal separately from product registration. As checked on 29 October 2026, the amended national framework extends the health-supplement halal transition period through 17 October 2028. Do not reuse an older blanket October 2026 deadline, or interpret the transition as automatic acceptance of any foreign certificate.
For a proposed halal project, trace gelatin, collagen, glycerin, flavors, carriers and processing aids, then confirm the certification and recognition route for the actual product with the local responsible party. A certificate for a different category or unrelated product does not settle this question.
Thailand: distinguish commercial import from samples
Commercial food imports require an import licence, with product permissions depending on classification. Agree the applicable product process and local label review before printing. A supplier's successful sample shipment does not prove that the retail product is cleared for sale.
Ask the importer to review ingredient identity, serving instructions, claims and the proposed presentation together. Keep sample quantities and purposes separate from the commercial shipment plan.
Singapore: classification comes before an approval claim
Products classified as health supplements are not subject to premarket approval or import, manufacturing and sales licensing by the health-products regulator. Dealers remain responsible for safety and quality; voluntary notification is a separate option, not product approval.
Food-like presentations can fall under the food route instead. A drink-style powder should therefore be classified on its actual composition and presentation, rather than assigned a route merely because the supplier calls it a supplement. Request the supporting formula, specifications, label review and safety information for the confirmed classification.
Use a sample review to test how the supplier works
A sample is most useful when it answers a written question. Agree whether it is a reference sample, a development trial or a production-representative sample. Record the formula version, material substitutions, package and purpose.
For softgels, review oil and shell identity, fill specification, appearance and relevant analytical requirements. For hard capsules, review fill weight, ingredient distribution and swallowability. For powders, review serving size, mixing behavior, flavor and moisture sensitivity.
Then evaluate the response to a problem. Does the supplier explain a failed requirement, propose an identifiable change and obtain approval before substituting materials? A clear change record is more useful than an unexplained second sample that looks better.
A taste or appearance check alone does not establish assay, microbiological quality or shelf life. Agree what must be demonstrated analytically and what remains provisional.
Assess the finished package for the actual route to market
Ask how the proposed bottle, blister, sachet or pouch protects this formula under the expected transport, warehousing and consumer-use conditions. Do not assume every Southeast Asian shipment has the same temperature and humidity exposure.
Review closure integrity, barrier specifications, compatibility, pack count and storage instructions. Ask whether stability evidence concerns the same formulation and final packaging, or a different product. Any proposed shelf life needs an appropriate basis.
Allocate responsibility for artwork translation and approval. Freeze country-specific copy before mass printing, and agree how formula or packaging changes will be communicated to the registration holder or local reviewer. A shared core product may still require separate market labels.
Compare commercial offers only after critical gaps are visible
Put quotations into a common scope: ingredient specification, amount per serving, units per pack, packaging components, testing, document preparation, freight basis and exclusions. Ask for MOQ, sample arrangements and production timing for that confirmed scope; do not treat a general website statement as a binding commitment.
Separate preparation time from the manufacturing schedule. Formula approval, material procurement, artwork, local review and production can have different dependencies. Ask what starts each clock.
Use three decisions rather than a single supplier score:
- Proceed: the manufacturing identity, formula scope, local route and evidence plan are clear enough for the next stage.
- Proceed conditionally: a defined item remains open, with an owner and a deadline before the relevant commitment.
- Hold: the site cannot be verified, materials are unspecified, or the supplier promises blanket approval without product-specific evidence.
An attractive price should not cancel a hold on a critical issue.
Send a focused project inquiry
Bodakang Bio supports dietary supplement OEM/ODM project discussions around formulation, dosage form, packaging and export coordination. The available manufacturing scope and documents are confirmed against the individual brief; destination-market approval is not assumed.
For a useful first review, send the target country, sales channel, product concept or formula, daily serving, preferred dosage form, pack count, quantity range and document needs. Identify any halal requirement and name the local importer or registration partner if already appointed.
Discuss your Southeast Asia supplement project, or review the OEM/ODM service scope before preparing your brief.
